Description

This report was published in February 2004 by SAHAJ (Society for Health Alternatives) as a part of the Women Centered Health Project in collaboration with the Public Health Department of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and the Royal Tropical Institute. It describes the process of implementing Stepping Stones (SS) Workshops with health care providers such as Auxiliary Nurse Midwives, Multi-Purpose Workers, Community Health Volunteers, and Full-Time Medical Officers within the Public Health Department of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and participants from community-based NGOs. The method of Stepping Stones Workshops provides a framework to train health care providers to address sexual health concerns and issues of sexuality with adequate knowledge and sensitivity. The report documents the process of implementing the SS training package on HIV/AIDS, gender, communication, and relationship skills, aimed at behavioural change for prevention and control of HIV/AIDS/STDs in the context of Mumbai. The report spans across 40 pages, outlining the proceedings of the workshops for trainers as well as for health care providers conducted in Mumbai. The report offers a blueprint to institutionalize the SS methodology within BMC as well as for NGOs.
