Mainstreaming Gender and Rights in Reproductive Health Care within a Public Health System: A Review of Women-Centred Health Project, Mumbai

This report was published in November 2004 by SAHAJ (Society for Health Alternatives) as a part of the Women Centered Health Project (WCHP) in collaboration with the Public Health Department of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and the Royal Tropical Institute. It was authored by T K Sunadari Ravindran and edited by Lakshmi Menon. It is a third-party review and evaluation of the Women Centred Health Project's work, achievements, and challenges over its seven years of operation from 1996 to 2003. It traces the efforts of the project to integrate the gender perspective in the services offered by the Public Health Department of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai to make healthcare for women more accessible and inclusive. In this regard, it reflects on the project's interventions in increasing men's involvement in the same, capacity building of health practitioners to adequately deal with women's issues, and introducing counselling services in hospital clinics. It has three sections that cover the following themes: backdrop and context within which the WCHP emerged and the project's vision/objectives; reflections on the achievements of the project in relation to specific interventions; and the scope for potential upscaling and the relevance of the project to global and national settings. The report is 59 pages long.
